Ahmed Abul Wafa al-Suaidi, the son of prominent Qari Mahmoud Abul Wafa al-Suaidi, has followed the path of his father and is gaining fame as a Quran reciter in Egypt.
In an interview with al-Yawm al-Sabi website, Ahmed answered questions about his Quranic activities.
He said he started learning the Quran by heart at an early age.
"My father would invite sheikhs (Quran teachers) to teach my brothers and me the Quran. I memorized the entire Quran after graduating from university.”
Ahmed said he also learned Quran recitation and has received a permission for recitation in different styles from Sheikh Nabil Ahmed Ali in Cairo.
He said he liked Quran recitation when he was a child but his first public recitation of the Holy Book came when he was studying pharmacy at university.
Asked whether his father encouraged him to recite the Quran, he said, "Actually he had not expected me to become a reciter as he thought I was just memorizing the Quran. When he first heard me recite the Quran, he was surprised but then encouraged me to continue enhancing my recitation skills.
"I would accompany my father to places where he recited the Quran and also listened to his recorded recitations.
"One thing I learned from my father was that Quran recitation is a mission, I believe that it is the easiest way for inviting people to Islam.”
Ahmed said that in addition to his father’s recitation, he likes the Quran recitations of such great Qaris as Sheikh Mohamed Umran, Sheikh Mohamed Sidiq Minshawi and Sheikh Mohamed Hilbawi.
He went on to say that he is trying to come up with a new and special school of Quran recitation.
