TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iraqi passenger jet was expected to arrive at the Damascus international airport on Monday.

According to Syrian Transport Minister Ali Hammoud, the landing of an Iraqi passenger plane in Damascus would be for the first time since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011.

He told Sputnik that it was an outcome of the Syrian army’s outstanding victories against terrorist groups and the two Arab countries’ joint efforts.

The official added that a number of other countries are also considering launching flights to Syria.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups fighting against the central government.

In the past few months, though, the Syrian army and its allies have gained significant victories against foreign-backed terrorist groups and liberated many of the areas occupied by them.
