TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraqi security forces arrested a member of the Daesh terrorist group who called himself the Mufti of Kirkuk.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the individual was identified and taken into custody after receiving information about his whereabouts, al-Sumaria News reported.

It added that the person, who operated as Daesh’s “Mufti in Kirkuk”, has confessed to having helped the terrorist group.

The individual has been handed to the judiciary officials for trial, the statement added.

In late 2017, Baghdad declared victory over Daesh.

However, the terrorist group still maintains a presence in some rural areas of Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Saladin, and Mosul.

The Iraqi army and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) continue to carry out frequent operations against the group in various parts of the country.
