Nairobi Webinar Discusses Status of Women from Quran, Religions’ Viewpoints
The Iranian Cultural Center in the African country organized the event in cooperation with the University of Nairobi’s faculty of philosophy and religious studies.
Scholars from universities in Kenya and Iran addressed the webinar, according to the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO).
In his address, Iranian Cultural Attaché Mohammad Reza Khatibi Vala said the seminar aimed at talking about the profound teachings of different faiths about the role and status of women.
He added that the study of sacred books and religious texts helps one to get a deeper understanding of the principles that guide women’s conduct in religious frameworks.
Iranian university professor Fereshteh Rouhafza in her speech referred to verse 97 of Surah An-Nahl of the Holy Quran and said this and many other verses in the Holy Book highlight the dignity and status of both men and women.
She noted that according to the verse, God gives rewards to those believers who do good deeds regardless of their gender.
University of Nairobi professor Hassan Kiniwa, who has a PhD in religious studies, was another speaker at the seminar.
He talked about Islam and rights of women, noting that there is an entire Surah of the Quran, Surah An-Nisa, named after women, which shows how Islam respects and values women.
He referred to the Seerah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as the best example showing how women’s rights are respected in Islam.
Other speakers also elaborated on topics like women’s contribution and role in social, political and economic fields, women’s rights, gender equality, and good treatment of women according to the teachings of the Holy Quran.
