TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center slammed the Zionist regime’s approval of new settlement units in the West Bank.

In a statement on Saturday, Al-Azhar described construction of settlements in occupied territories as stark violation of Palestinian sovereignty.

The center underlined its opposition to the move and called on the international community to stand up against the Tel Aviv regime’s colonial policies, youm7.com website reported.

Israel approved 2,166 new homes in settlements across the occupied West Bank Wednesday, official figures showed, ending an eight-month lull in settlement expansion.

The approvals came less than a month after the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed agreements to normalize relations with Israel, which in return pledged to freeze its plans to annex swathes of the West Bank.

Excluding annexed east Jerusalem al-Quds, more than 450,000 Israelis live in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, alongside some 2.7 million Palestinians.
