IQNA – The Saudi authorities have introduced new regulations for children's strollers at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the holiest site in Islam.

According to the Saudi newspaper Okaz, the General Authority for Care of the Two Holy Mosques, a state agency, has specified where the strollers are permitted or prohibited inside the mosque.

The strollers are banned from the mataf, the courtyard where Muslims perform the ritual of circling the Holy Kaaba. However, the strollers are allowed on the upper floors of the mataf and in the ma’sa area, where Muslims run between the hills of Safa and Marwa, another ritual of the Umrah pilgrimage.

The strollers may be restricted from these areas as well if they become crowded.

Umrah consists of two main rituals: Tawaf, the circling of the Holy Kaaba, and Sa’i, the running between Safa and Marwa.

Last year, a record number of 13.5 million pilgrims performed Umrah, according to Saudi authorities.
